Ever wanted to know what it’s like to write books? Want to know Archie’s favourite pastime?
Yvette answers your FAQs here!
Where do you get your ideas from?
I get my ideas from just about everywhere? Places, people and objects all inspire me. I wrote my book about Cockatoo Island by accident after I visited it and wanted to know more about what happened on the island. And my new books about Archie the puppy are inspired by my real-life puppy who is also called Archie!
What advice would you give young writers?
Just make a start! Nothing will get written if you don’t put the pen on a page, or switch your computer on. Sometimes I start with a single sentence, sometimes a poem, sometimes I pinch a bit of conversation I overheard and go from there.
Should writers carry around a notebook at all times?
Where were you born?
I was born in Sydney in 1978 (that should answer the next question you probably have). I have been lucky to travel to many places but Sydney is my favourite place in the world!
Have you always been a writer?
No, but I ALWAYS wanted to write. Some of my first jobs involved working in a retirement home serving meals, working in a bookshop, slogging away in a publishing house, freelance writing for magazines and newspapers and then I became a high school English teacher! I started writing books when I studied teaching.
Does Archie help you write?
Archie is my muse - he inspires me to write. In fact, he was so helpful, the book I started out writing…eventually became a book series about a very inquisitive pup called ARCHIE! Let’s just say that the other book never got written…
What does Archie do in his spare time?
Archie loves seeking out and destroying socks, shoes and other important bits of clothing. He has a basket of toys with 43 different toys in it! His favourite thing in the world is show me all of them, every single day. Apart from Foxy, his favourite toy at the moment is Mr Llama. In winter, he likes to curl up on my heated blanket and dream doggy dreams.
